OUR HISTORY: MOTORSPORTS WITH PASSION

Owners: Rob & Kimberly Reeves (Co-Owner: Ron Hodgson)

In the autumn of 1997 the local racing facility (Capitol Raceway) went into receivership with the expectation never to open its doors again. As avid motorsport enthusiasts, this was a crushing blow. Deciding the outcome of a closed facility was unacceptable; we took it upon ourselves to keep motorsports alive in Edmonton, putting together a plan to rescue the facility from the bank and negotiate a long term lease with the Edmonton Airport Authority. We opened “Labatt Raceway” in the spring of 1998. (Ironically, running and owning a Motorsports Park has taken us out from behind the wheel of race cars and back in the “business” drivers seat, (but… we still love it!)

In our first operating season, we held apx 50 events with an attendance of 40,000; 19 years later our facility annually holds a comprehensive schedule of over 260 internationally recognized events like the Rocky Mountain Nationals, Monster Truck Throwdown and the incredible Street Legal program. Castrol Raceway has made the leap from regional exposure to Canada’s most comprehensive motorsport facility boasting over 245,000 visitors annually.

In the beginning, we really didn’t have a set business model, just a huge passion for motorsports; our racetrack is basically a hobby business gone crazy (we’re at it 300MPH all the time).  We both had a background in business and knew “racing”, however we didn’t know much about entertainment, event planning, public Guest service, serving drinks or flipping burgers- we just knew we didn’t want racing to be lost in Edmonton when so many other small tracks were closing forever. Throughout the years we’ve built our business with a lot of determination, a huge learning curve -both on and off the “track”, and a lot of hands on commitment. We were inspired to make it fun, to create an exceptional facility, welcoming to all ages and all types of motorsports. As it turned out, our racing business quickly became a way of life, and we happily extend that life’s passion to our family and friends; the place where lifelong friends are gained and a family is raised.

Since we purchased the track, we’ve reinvested every dollar made (apx $14 Million), growing from a local “small” track to an internationally recognized motorsport facility; our latest capitol venture being the development of our $5 Million (2.7km) Road Course. In 2016, we took a small break on major capitol investments, however looking forward to building a new trackside entertainment pavilion and expanding our entertainment offerings beyond motorsports.
